
Joyce M.Y. Chan found her passion in piano from the age of three. Her teachers include Professor Tomislav Baynov, Professor David Gwilt, Dr Mary Wu, Ms Dorothy Uytengsu,and Ms Alannah Ong. In addition to piano, she plays the flute and received vocal training during her high school and university years in Canada.
As a pianist, Joyce won the international piano-six-hands competition in Marktoberdorf, Germany, in May 2002. She performed in the “Piano Cocktails” concert series in Vancouver, Hong Kong, Harbin, Shanghai, and Suzhou. As a member of the “Baynov Piano Ensemble,” she participated in piano ensemble concerts, including the opening of Stravinsky Hall in Donaueschingen, Germany, and the Liszt Piano Music Festival in Bayreuth.
During her university years in Canada, she won numerous awards from the British Columbia Conservatory of Music festival, received an Associated Performance diploma from the Royal Conservatory of Toronto (ARCT) with honours standing, and performed at piano charity concerts, such as raising funds for BC Children’s Hospital in Canada.
To pursue her teaching career after a concert tour in Taiwan, Joyce returned to Hong Kong in 2004. During her stay, she studied piano performance and pedagogy with Professor David Gwilt and gained her Master’s Degree in Arts in Music at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She further completed the postgraduate performance program at the Trossingen University of Music in Germany. As an ABRSM examiner, Steinway Honorary Teacher, as well as the Deputy Chairman for the Hong Kong Music Talent and Performance Award, Joyce has been invited as adjudicator for several local and international competitions, such as the Hong Kong (Asia) Youth Piano Competition and the International Piano-Six-Hands Competition. She is also a visiting lecturer at the Bavarian Music Academy in Hammelburg, Germany. Ms Joyce Chan nurtured many young talents, and her students received prizes in many local and international competitions, including one student who was accepted to the Juilliard School. Currently, she is active as a piano teacher, pianist, adjudicator, examiner, and organiser for concerts, masterclasses and competitions.
